LANA'I…the most secluded Hawaiian island
A much-desired destination
for Hawai'i folks seeking an escape, the Island of Lana'i
is a tribute to the vision of Castle & Cooke, the old Hawai'i
company which owns most of the land. Together with the 3,000
residents, they have chosen to change with the times rather
than see their homes and their cherished lifestyle vanish.
They have succeeded in reshaping
Lana'i into Hawai'i's most secluded paradise - which now feels,
at just 18 miles long and13 miles wide, almost like a private
island retreat.

Lana'i attractions include:
Garden of the Gods
A fantasyland of multi-hued ancient
lava pinnacles whose rocks change colours dramatically
at sunrise and sunset.
Shipwreck Beach
Not for swimming, but hard to beat
for the shell seeking and beach combing and the epic
view of Moloka'i, across the channel. The old Liberty
Ship rusting on the shore break attests to the treacherous
waters.

Keomuku
Appropriately, not far from Shipwreck
Beach is this real Hawai'i ghost town. A century ago,
its residents managed the Maunalei Sugar Company. Now
there are only coconut trees, overgrown estates and
the oldest church on the island, which you can still
explore. All in all, an eerie must-see.
Hulopu'e Beach
Easily one of the top beaches in
the state, this white-sand, crescent-shaped sanctuary
is a marine conservation area perfect for snorkelling,
swimming, lazy outings under the nearby trees and grassy
areas.

Munro Trail
This great eight-mile trail leads
through rainforest to Lana'ihale, at 3,370 ft, the highest
point on Lana'i. What a sight - Maui, Moloka'i, O'ahu,
and the Big Island are all in view, as well as Hauola
Gulch, 2,000 ft. straight down.
